A major work in the philosophy of religion, this book interprets the Jesus story in terms of postmodern philosophy - particularly using Jacques Derrida?s categories of "desire," "gift," and "recognition." Author Jan-Olav Henriksen also attempts to reformulate Christology without resorting to such metaphysical concepts as substance, transcendence, etc. While not denying traditional doctrines, Henriksen explicates the meaning of Jesus' life and death in ways that engage contemporary philosophy and challenge contemporary (academic) Christians to rethink the basics of their faith; and he outlines the possibility of a "post-metaphysical Christology." / Henriksen’s book is a clearly reasoned guide not only to the argument that Christology still has something to say to contemporary believers but also to ways in which theologians must learn to reconnect to everyday human experience.

New Angles on the Meaning of Jesus Christ.
By Richard C. Woodhouse
This is a hard book but worth the effort for the theological insights that the Author brings to His study. Postmodern is a slippery term. It means so many different things to different people. Some would say thats exactly the effect of postmodern thinking is supposed to have. One aspect of postmodern thought that is appealing is that it can often be honest about the overly assured views of enlightenment modernism. 300 years on from the enlightenment, people are starting to see the negative side of the Modern World and its dead end views of ultimate meaning. That said, professor Hendricksen has written a great book on some different ways of understanding Jesus Christ. He remains broadly orthodox doctrinally, but He comes up with many unthought of ways of approaching the meaning of the Christian Faith, which is always to be focused on "Who Jesus Christ Was/Is?" One interesting point that I found greatly helpful was his words on the meaning of God in the prologue to John's Gospel. What is meant by God? And how the human Jesus can't be understood without reference to the word God. Thats in the first section of the book. Towards the end of the book is a section on Representation. On how Jesus Christ represents us to God, and God to us, so to speak. This book is not easy reading. But like many good Theologians, He makes difficult ideas fairly understandable to average interested Christian laymen. I am in the process of reading the book through for the second time. Its one of thesd
