About the Author

Colin Baker is Professor of Education at the University of Wales, Bangor and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He has three bilingual children and frequently gives talks to parents and teachers on bilingualism. He is the author of 14 books and over 50 articles on bilingualism and bilingual education, with specific interests in bilingual development in young children and bilingual education. His books include Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism (4th edition 2006) which has been translated into Japanese, Spanish, Latvian, Greek and Mandarin. He is the Editor of the International Journal of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education.

READING Life Without a Recipe IS A RECIPE FOR A DELIGHTFUL READ!

Just last week, I wrote this on my Facebook page about LIFE WITHOUT A RECIPE: I just finished reading, this morning, LIFE WITHOUT A RECIPE by Diana Abu Jaber. I've read several of Diana's books over the years, having first heard of her work through two good friends, both of whom recommended at least 2, maybe even 3 of them. This latest is her 2nd memoir and there's so much that I loved about it. Bottom line: Diana doesn't hold back: it is truth-telling in the best way. Beautifully written. Plenty of soul-searching insights. Often funny (I just had to read to hubby the part about her one foray into writing "adult fiction," which cracked him up, and then he threw the "punch line" back at me the next night!) And of course, I love how she writes about food. One of her strategies to get her very young daughter to eat is so precious: "I know a secret snack. Something the unicorns like to eat..." That might even get ME to eat a few unappetizing (to me) tidbits... well, nothing with turmeric in it though, or jalapeño, or fish, or cilantro, or... Anyway, recommending this book to all, as well as 3 others by her that I've read: ARABIAN JAZZ (novel), CRESCENT (novel) and THE LANGUAGE OF BAKLAVA (memoir & my fav of them all).

The Recipe for Life and Laughter

Having fallen in love with Diana's writing and her grandiose real-life characters in The Language of Baklava, I was thrilled to see them continue to be portrayed in Life Without a Recipe.
Who could not love Bud when he is so lovingly portrayed in scenes like: "the priest presented Dad with a contract to raise his children within the Catholic faith, Dad signed in Arabic. He nudged Gram in the ribs; as if she were in one the joke, and, instead of writing his name, wrote: I make no promises.
The other return character is Grace, Diana's grandmother, who advises her: Never learn how to sew, cook, type, or iron. That's how they get you.
Bud and Grace agree on one thing: Men are terrible.
But in forging her own recipe for life, Diana defies both strong characters to fall in love with Scott and adopt her own child to teach her recipes to.
This is a beautifully crafted and elogantly written story of Diana's daughter Gracie who brings all of the strng characters in Diana's life together through love and laughter.
I loved delving deeper into Diana's life and continuing the family story. I can't wait until the third installment, as I know Gracie will provide enough fodder for a lifetime of stories.

Francisco Munoz Alvarez

Francisco Munoz has over 23 years of experience in consulting, analysis, support, implementation, and migration of Oracle products. He is also an expert in most phases of a database life cycle, for example, development, stabilization, security, backup and recovery, tuning, installations, and data warehouse (ETL) with excellent implementation and support methodologies, being a popular speaker on many Oracle conferences around the world.

He is also the President of CLOUG (Chilean Oracle Users Group), LAOUC (Latin American Oracle Users Groups Community which is the umbrella organization for all Latin America), and NZOUG (New Zealand Oracle Users Group). Francisco worked as an associate technologist at Oracle Brazil and Chile, was an Oracle instructor for New Horizons Centre, Chile and for Oracle education (Brazil and Chile), and also worked on the first team to introduce Oracle to South America (Oracle 6 and Beta version of Oracle 7). Besides the core database, he has a very strong knowledge of Linux, Solaris, Oracle RAC, Data Guard, RMAN, Oracle Exadata and Oracle Enterprise Manager.

Very good book!

Just what you need to get started with 12c. Dives deep into architecture details, provides examples, and architectural block diagrams where neccessary.

Chapter1 gives an introduction to basics of B and R. Importance of archive logging. Architectural side of difference between redo and undo.
Chapter2 instructs how to and how not to use nologging, very detailed and with examples, also gives a list of useful archive logging queries for daily use.The basics about logging in chapter1 are useful in understanding chapter 2
Chapter3 lists all new features of 12c B and R,
Chapter4 useful for old Oracle databases that use cold and begin backup type of hot backups
Chapter5 introduces RMAN. Types of backup using RMAN is explained in detail. And unlike the title of chapter5 which says "simple backups", reasonably complex backups are also discussed. Compression is also elaborated with example. The chapter ends with views that can be used on daily basis.
Chapter6:recovery scenarios and BR recipes, recipes are shown for 12c also, theory of startup command is discussed again in detail,DRA, chapter 5 and 6 are more than 60 pages each, init parameters that affect the operation are also mentioned where required.
Chapter7 Starts with controlfile basics and shortcomings of controlfile for storing backup metadata. Advantages of RC over Controlfile. VPC, maintenance activities of recovery catalog, scripts and ends with v$views that start with "RC"
Chapter8 explains high level concepts of tuning and troubleshooting IO issues with RMAN, Tracing RMAN sessions etc.
Chapter 9 and 10 discusses capabilities of data pump, new features, interactive command line etc with examples
Chapter 11 Shows how Oracle suggested backup can be performed with OEM. SQL developer coverage is overviewed at the end.

Martha Sears, RN and William Sears MD are the pediatrics experts to whom American parents turn for advice and information on all aspects of pregnancy, birth, childcare, and family nutrition. Martha Sears is a registered nurse, certified childbirth educator, and breastfeeding consultant. Dr. Sears was trained at Harvard Medical School's Children's Hospital and Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, the largest children's hospital in the world. He has practiced pediatrics for nearly 50 years. Together, the Searses have authored more than 40 pediatrics books.

If you plan to nurse -- you must have this book.

This is an incredible book. I read three breastfeeding books in anticipation of nursing my child. This one is by far the best of the bunch. It is informative, supportive, easy to read, and contains all the information you could ever want. It also is written in a style that is incredibly supportive of a new mom (as I was). It can be used as a reference book, but it is interesting enough that it is a great cover to cover read (I read it while nursing!) And -- if one has problems with nursing in the beginning (as I did), it gives you the support and encouragement needed to keep trying. Another friend of mine to whom I sent the book said that without it, she would have quit. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Good book, horrible formatting.

I'm 8 months pregnant, so I haven't gotten to use the information yet. It seems to contain a LOT of good info.

My low review is for the lazy, careless way this book was converted to e-book format. It's quite clear that no one at the publishing company read through the book as an ebook. There are incomplete words all over the place to the point where it is sometimes difficult to understand. Even worse, the formatting is TERRIBLE. The charts that pop up every now and then are basically unuseable, even if you zoom out as far as possible. I've read this book on a Kindle Paperwhite (gen 2), a Kindle Fire (gen 1), and a Nexus 7 (gen 2). Same poor reading experience on all of them. It's like reading something from a bad indie publisher. Extremely disappointed with this e-book.

If the publisher updates it, I'll be more than happy to update my review.

Best Breastfeeding Book on the Market!

This is an amazing book, I highly recommend for any pregnant or new mother who is planning to breastfeed her baby. I bought this as a gift for my sister-in-law who was pregnant with her first baby. I already had my own copy of this book and I found that it was extremely useful from pregnancy on through toddlerhood. The index in the back was extremely helpful in looking up particular categories whenever I had a question or concern. I love Dr. & Mrs. Sear's ideology and input on breastfeeding. You will love this book too! Because of this helpful & insightful book, I had the confidence to continue nursing my own babies until they were between 1.5 years old and 2 years old.

Awesome!

I love Kelley Armstrong! Witch Magic has my two favorite books by her: Dime Store Magic and Industrial Magic. Both books are action packed and wonderful. Dime Store Magic is my all time favorite, but Industrial Magic is non-stop action and continues building on these great characters. Kelley is a very talented writer and has created a world and people that are truly amazing. Paige and Lucas are the stars of these books and are brought to life beautifully.

Belem and in awe

In this book, Gary shares an incredible experience he had in Belem, Brazil in 2002 while preaching in a large stadium for thousands of people. Funny thing is that I am from belem and I was there on that time to testify all this. I was only a boy at that time, around the age of 17 and I was there serving as one of the translators. Funny thing that I bought this book and I got shocked when I read this part where he shares his experiences there. I'm amazed! I remember seeing him preaching with my friends. He was really rocking out and preaching with such power and authority! I believe more than one thousand people got saved on that day. I feel so blessed by knowing that I was there seeing all that. I didn't know it meant a lot to him. Today Im 32 years old and i live in Oregon, married and I have two kids. It's a delightful surprise when.. I get the book.. I read it.. And he's talking about my hometown and I was there when all that happened!! I was there! I felt like I traveled back in time and I was just living every single second of that special crusade all over again... I read this entire book in 1 hour. Loved it.. Not 5 stars but 10 thousand!
